Coffee

Magnesium and sulphur

Required for: Yield, quality (formation of caffeine)

High deficiency risk: Mg: Acid strongly weathered soils, e.g. Ulti-and Oxisols

S: Soils with low organic matter content, high Al and Fe oxides

Deficiency symptoms: Mg: Chlorosis of the leaf blades between the veins

S: Reduced leaf size and yellowing of the younger leaves

Optimal leaf concentrations: Mg: 0.30-0.40% (tip of bearing branches)

S: 0.20-0.30%

Recommendations: 100 – 120 kg Kieserite/ha as maintenance dressing at an adequate supply level. Soils with low Mg supply (fertility class A) should receive 1.5-2.0 times that amount. Application on light soils should be prior to the main uptake. Top-dressing by foliar Epsom Salt solutios (5%) is recommended to supply peak demand, especially under dry conditions.
