Rubber

Magnesium and sulphur

Required for: Compatibility between root stocks and clone, growth and dry matter production of young trees, girth and latex formation

High deficiency risk: Mg: On highly weathered Ulti- and Oxisols with low pH and low base saturation

S: Soils with low organic matter status and high Fe and Al- oxide contents.

Deficiency symptoms: Mg: Yellowing of leaves which are partly reduced in size

S: Stunted tree growth, pale green appearance of the canopy

Optimal leaf concentrations Mg: 0.20-0.25%

Recommendations: Immature trees receive 100-200 g of Kieserite per year to encourage girth growth and canopy formation. In mature trees, which are in a steady state, nutrients are recycled between canopy and soil, and where leaching and runoff are minimized, application can be reduced to 40 - 60 g Kieserite/tree/year.

Mg deficiency leads to chlorotic and generally smaller rubber leaves.

A young rubber tree established on a soil with a low organic matter content, suffering from S deficiency.
