Cereals

Cereals, general (barley, oats, wheat)

Magnesium and sulphur

Required for: Yield and protein formation

High deficiency risk: Mg: Sandy soils, acid soils

S: Soils with low OM content, poor microbial activity
Deficiency symptoms: Mg: Interveinal chlorosis of flag leaf, incomplete filling of ear

S: Stunted growth, yellowing of foliage, reduced N° of grains/ear

Recommendations: 50 - 60 kg Kieserite/ha as maintenance dressing depending on soil type. At low Mg soil supply (fertility class A) 1.5-2.0 times that amount should be applied. On light soils and danger of leaching losses, split application or additional foliar application is recommended. In this case 5% Bittersalz (Epsom Salt) solutions should be applied between shooting and grain filling.
