Oil crops
Vegetable oil is mainly produced from eight crops with a total output of 86.4 million tons world-wide. Major producers are soybean, followed by oil palm, oilseed rape and sunflower.
These crops need magnesium and sulphur in large amounts due to their essential role in the biomass production. Moreover, oil formation which is a process requiring starch and high amounts of energy, depends greatly on the supply of adequate magnesium. Sulphur is a constituent of many plant oils and fats.
