Oilseed rape

Magnesium and sulphur

Required for: Yield, oil formation, oil quality

High deficiency risk: Mg: Heavily limed soils, soils that receive large amounts of NH4+, K+, sandy soils, excessive rain

S: Sandy soils with low organic matter content and in areas with small atmospheric sulphur depositions

Deficiency symptoms: Mg: Interveinal chlorosis turning from pale green to yellow

S: Poor flowering, whitish blossom colour, spoon-like malformation of leaf blade, poor pod set.

Optimal leaf concentrations Mg: 0.21-0.62%
S: 6.0-7.0 mg/kg SO4-S
Recommendations: Dressings of 150-200 kg Kieserite/ha are recommended as maintenance dressing. To cover the high S requirement of OSR, this treatment is combined with a 5% Epsom Salt foliar spray between shooting and flowering stage.

Mg deficiency symptoms occur as interveinal chlorosis.

S deficiency leads to smaller pods with a reduced number of seeds per pod.
