Soybean

Magnesium and sulphur

Required for: Yield, root nodulation, oil content of the seed

High deficiency risk: Mg: Sandy soils, acid soils, cool wet conditions, Al toxicity in the soil

S: Weathered soils, low in organic matter with poor microbial activity

Deficiency symptoms: Mg: Pale green lower leaves whit-ish/yellow mottled interveinal tissue, which later looks speckled bronze

S: Stunted growth, pale green leaves, chlorosis especially on upper leaves

Optimal leaf concentrations Mg: 0.23-0.55%
S: 0.16-0.20%
Recommendations: For yields of 3 t/ha,120 – 180 kg Kieserite/ha as maintenance dressing to none Mg deficient soils. 1.5 – 2.0 times higher rates are required on deficient soils. Pre-plant broadcast Kieserite can be supplemented with 5% Epsom Salt foliar sprays.

Interveinal chlorosis turning into necrosis under severe Mg deficiency.

An adequate supply of Mg and S is essential for achieving a high yield and good quality.
