Magnesium and sulphur
| Required for: |
Yield, high sugar extraction
|
| High deficiency risk: |
Mg: |
Heavily limed soils, acid soils, soils that receive large amounts of NH4+, K+
|
| |
S: |
Highly weathered soils, low in organic matter and high in Fe oxides
|
| Deficiency symptoms: |
Mg: |
Red necrotic speckles spread across all leaves in severe cases
|
| |
S: |
Chlorosis and purple leaf margins. Severe deficiency leads to shorter, narrower leaves and slender stalks
|
| Optimal leaf concentrations |
Mg: |
0.10-0.30% |
|
S: |
0.10-0.14% |
| Recommendations: |
240 400 kg Kieserite/ha pre- or shortly after planting to none deficient soils. Acid soils with poor Mg status should receive 1.5-2.0 times that amount. |

Red necrotic speckles are typical for Mg deficiency. Under severe deficiency, the "rusty" appearance usually spreads across all leaves.

Sulphur deficiency symptoms occur as chlorosis an purple leaf margins. Under severe deficiency, leaves are shorter and narrower and stalks more slender than normal.
