Nutrients in the soil - Magnesium

Factor Influence on plant availability
Soil type The release rate of Mg from non-exchangeable pool

Organic matter Binding of Mg

CEC Potential of storing and releasing Mg

Climate Degree of weathering

Soil moisture Degree of loss by leaching

pH Potential Mg occupancy of the cation exchange complex

Land use, agricultural practice Loss of nutrients by removal and by fertilisation practice

The total Mg content of the soil is divided into non-exchangeable, ex-changeable and Mg in the soil solution.

Plants take up Mg exclusively from the soil solution, which is replenished by Mg from the exchangeable fraction.

The Mg status of a soil is characterised by a dynamic process which is influenced by a range of factors.
