Nutrients in the soil - Sulphur

| Factor |
Influence on plant availability |
| Soil moisture |
Degree of loss by leaching
Degree of loss by volatilisation
|
| Oxygen |
Needed for the transformation process
Low soil oxygen leads to H2S
|
| pH |
Acid soil conditions favour the transformation process
|
| Microbial activity |
As more active as more S available
|
| Organic matter |
As higher the soil OM content as higher the S supply potential

Originates from pyrite FeS2 of primary minerals and from the atmospheric deposition of SO2.
90% of the total S is in the organic and 10% in the inorganic form, of which half is found in the soil solution.
The plants absorb S almost exclusively from the soil solution in the form of SO42-.
The transformation of S into SO42- is influenced by various factors. |
